Kabouter: Vondelpark
2021 — KadS

[ENG] As a joke, Maarten Bel asked a garden centre’s information desk whether the gnomes were life size. The staff member replied that they did not know, but would check for him. The unexpected answer to his smart-ass question, made him wonder whether he could re-ignite people’s belief in gnomes. After all, the mythical beings are often the first victims of approaching adulthood and a waning imagination.

At 1.96 metres tall, Bel doesn’t make a very believable gnome. Nevertheless, he will reside in the Vondelpark as Maarten de Vondelkabouter [Maarten the Vondel Gnome] complete with a jolly pointy hat and everything, during KadS 2021. His base will be a gigantic dented beer can marked ‘contents: 33,000 litres’. This is less fairy-tale than a red and white toadstool, yet perfectly suits the capital’s recreational areas.

Bel will invite passers-by to converse. He will also wander around trying to seduce them into activities that always end unexpectedly. For instance, people can search for small pointy hats bearing the contact details of gnomes looking for pen friends. Mushroom soup will be prepared for the park’s homeless. And there will be a street junk finding contest whereby various kinds of litter are awarded points on the basis of their rarity.

Bel views the Vondelpark as his canvas and himself as the weirdo that paints on it. Moreover, he acts as imagination’s ambassador that believing in gnomes is the perfect example of. He hopes to return park visitors to the child-like state in which everything is still possible and nothing too wild as well as one in which an oversized gnome isn’t so weird.
